Are you familiar with your thyroid gland? Do you know what it looks like? Where it’s located? What’s its purpose? For most people the answer to all these questions are no. Not everyone knows about the thyroid gland, let alone its purpose in our body. Yet it plays an important role in maintaining healthy bodily functions. For the purpose of understanding, I’ll be providing basic knowledge about our thyroid.
The thyroid gland is located at the base of the front neck (below the Adams apple). It is shaped like a butterfly, one wing or lobe of your thyroid lies in each side of your windpipe. It contains gel-like substance and is surrounded by a single layer of cells. It is part of the body’s endocrine system, a system that consists of organs and tissues that produce, store and secrete hormones directly into the blood stream.
So what does the thyroid gland do?
Well the thyroid produces 3 hormones, the T3 RT3 and T4. These hormones affect almost every cell in our body and assists in regulating growth, metabolism and energy levels. As you can see our thyroid has an effect on our weight and energy levels. So it’s important to consult with your doctor when you have weight disorders or if you’re always feeling fatigued it might be that there is a problem with our thyroid gland.
It even assists our liver in regulating bad and good cholesterol in the body. This function has an effect in our bowel movement as the bad cholesterol is placed in the bile then is moved into the feces. Too much of the thyroid hormone can cause frequent bowel movement and less of it causes constipation.
Our thyroid is controlled by the pituitary gland, a gland in our brain. It’s the gland responsible for sending commands to the thyroid gland. It is assisted by the hypothalamus as it gives information to the pituitary gland.
As you can see our thyroid gland has an important function in our body, yet most people know little about them. So it’s important that we also take our time to learn about the thyroid gland, what it does to our body and how we can take care of it. Having the basic knowledge about our thyroid will help us understand more some of the unexplained conditions we feel in our body and be able to react accordingly. It will also help us care for it more, as the old saying goes, prevention is always better than the cure.
